CHICO — Police said they have no proof that Ricardo Velasquez, 26, is dead, and will continue to feature him periodically as one of Butte County’s most wanted fugitives.
Velasquez’ appearance in the Enterprise-Record June 6 prompted e-mails from several people who claimed he died about 21?2 years ago.
One person said he and a passenger were killed in a crash with a drunken driver. Another claimed seeing people around Chico wearing memorial T-shirts with the dates of his birth and death.
A third person said they found a myspace.com page dedicated to his memory.
A search of the newspaper’s archives failed to turn up a story relating to the man’s death.
Chico police Sgt. Dave Barrow said his department received information that Velasquez had fled to Mexico. He said if the man died there, officials in the U.S. might never know about it.
Velasquez is wanted on two felony warrants for failure to appear on charges of assault and discharge of a firearm in an inhabited dwelling.
He absconded on a bail amount of $1 million.
Velasquez is now 26, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, about 165 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information about the fugitive, including his possible death, is asked to call Chico police at 897-4911.
