Residents in a Massachusetts town are being urged to shelter in place after a barricaded subject fired at police attempting to serve a warrant Wednesday morning.
Middleborough police said they are dealing with an “active incident” involving an armed fugitive on Wareham Street. They said they attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a wanted fugitive at 469 Wareham St. along with deputies from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department around 9:30 a.m. when the suspect opened fire with a long gun.
No one was hit by the gunfire, which prompted police to pull back, take cover and establish a perimeter around the house. The suspect remains barricaded inside, and police are working to negotiate his surrender.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
Residents and businesses between Interstate 495 and Locust Street along Route 28 are being asked to shelter in place. All others should avoid the area.
State police have responded to the scene, along with an Air Wing unit, to assist local police. The Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team has also been called in to the scene.
The I-495 northbound ramp to Exit 3 is closed at this time, state police said. Route 28 is also closed in both directions between 495 and Spruce Street. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
Police said the residence in question is the only home in an otherwise commercial/industrial area.
