A man who allegedly assaulted an Amarillo Police Department officer has been named to the Texas 10 Most-Wanted Fugitives list, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Carlos Rafael Benitez, 29, has been added to the most-wanted list and a cash reward of up to $5,000 is now being offered for information leading to the capture of the man authorities say he failed to appear in court to face charges of aggravated assault of an Amarillo Police Department officer and evading arrest with a vehicle stemming from a traffic stop on Aug. 2, 2016.

Benitez was indicted in Potter County on October 12, 2016, and has been wanted since March, DPS said. His last known address is in Amarillo. He also has tied to Hedley and Donley County, according to DPS.

Benitez is described by DPS as being 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 170 pounds with a tattoo of “BENITEZ” on his back. Benitez has a history of working in the tire service business.

DPS warns residents not to attempt to apprehend Benitez, as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Texas Crime Stoppers, which is funded by the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division, offers cash rewards to any person who provides information that leads to the arrest of one of the Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives or sex offenders, according to DPS. In 2017, Texas Crime Stoppers paid $61,000 in total rewards for anonymous tips that resulted in arrests.

To be eligible for the cash rewards, tipsters MUST provide information to authorities by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-8477, texting “DPS” — followed by the tip — to 274637, submitting a tip through the DPS website dps.texas.gov/texas10mostwanted, submitting a Facebook tip at facebook.com/texas10mostwanted or by submitting a tip through the DPS Mobile app available for iPhone and Android devices..

All tips are anonymous regardless of how they are submitted, and tipsters will be provided a tip number instead of using a name.
