WASHINGTON — After years on the run, a suspect on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitive” list has been arrested in Woodbridge, Virginia.

It was back in May of 2011 that Walter Yovany Gomez — in his early 20s at the time — became a suspect in a particularly horrific crime.

Gomez, a member of a New Jersey branch of the MS-13 gang, is accused of striking Julio Matute in the head with a baseball bat, slicing his throat and stabbing him 17 times with a screw driver, according to the FBI.

Matute was believed to be socializing with members of a rival gang.

The co-conspirator who acted with Gomez was apprehended, charged and found guilty of Matute’s homicide.

When police went to Gomez’s residence after the crime, they say Gomez jumped out a back window and fled into the woods. Later investigations revealed that he drove to Maryland with assistance from fellow MS-13 gang members.

A federal arrest warrant was issued for Gomez in Newark, New Jersey, on September 19, 2013, after he was charged with violent crime in aid of racketeering.

Gomez was placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list in April of this year. The FBI says tips from the public and a well-coordinated investigation helped lead to Gomez’s arrest Friday in Woodbridge.
