A fugitive from El Dorado County who was on the federal government’s Northern California Most Wanted List was arrested after a nearly five-year search.

The El Dorado County District Attorney’s office said in a news release that Javed Noori was found by special agents of the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service on the East African island of Mauritius. He was transported to San Francisco International Airport last week, arrested, then returned Monday to El Dorado County.

The news release provided these details: Noori faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, including two special allegations for inflicting great bodily injury and for a prior strike for very similar conduct. Noori fled on the eve of his trial for the felony assault charges. Investigators from El Dorado County’s DA’s Office attempted to find Noori after he failed to appear in court. Once they learned that he had fled the county, they worked with the DSS to conduct an international fugitive investigation. During that time, Noori had obtained a false Afghanistan passport and traveled throughout Asia.

If convicted, Noori faces a maximum sentence of 11 years, not including any federal crime he may have committed while he was a fugitive. His next court appearance is scheduled Friday.

“I am pleased that after nearly five years, we have finally brought this fugitive back to California to face justice for his crimes. The District Attorney’s Office investigators worked tirelessly for years to bring Mr. Noori to justice,” said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson in a statement.
